We got my 10 year old son a ps3 for his birthday but am now being hounded to get the network. You know, because "everyone else" has it. My 13 year old son has 360 live and I am even not to sure about that. I geuss my main question is this: When he joins the network, can he have a "group" that he can only interact with? Or if he is on a game, anyone and everyone can talk with him?
I don't think there are any limitations. If you trust your kid, just tell him not to respond to messages from random people (Which, i'd say, will RARELY happen). if you're really strict, when he plays a gun game, such as Call of Duty, tell him to mute everyone and you'll/he'll have no problem. There's really nothing to do with the PS3 Network other than play his games online, which every game is for. Don't give him any credit card information, so he won't download anything with a pricetag. It's really nothing to be concerned about. I'd say xbox live is more enhanced(that's why you pay for the services) than the ps3 network.
Looking through it now, there is a certain level (1-9) for parental control on the games he plays, you can control whether or not he can start the internet browser, or whether or not he can watch a dvd, you can also just put a password on the ps3 and only let him play online when you're around.
