Is there some place, locally, where I can get my PS3 serviced?

me neither.

you should just call sony. i'm pretty sure that they have a flat fee to fix it if its out of warranty (which I THINK is $150, but I'm not sure).

The 150 isn't the problem. The 4-6 weeks without a PS3 is the problem.

This happened to a friend of mine and the turnaround was much faster than that. I think it was under two weeks for him.

My roommates is a 80GB backwards compatible system. The problem with his system is their cheap blu ray diode and it (along with the yellow light of death) seems to be a pretty common problem if you Google them.

And yes, out of warranty repair is $150 thru Sony.

I have an 80gig backward compat. and i have never had anything wrong with it...

The cheap HD cables i bought online for 8 bucks, however, are another story.
