I'm planning a new home entertainment rig, and looking at BRD players for $599 or so, I'm wondering if it might just be logical to go with a PS3. How is it's blu-ray player? Will it do full 1080p?

We use my son's PS3 to watch movies. Yes, it does 1080p and the quality is great. Interestingly, CNET recommends it above all other Blu-Ray players in the $500 range and you get the game capability to boot. What's not to like?
Glenn - I've had my PS3 for almost 2 years, have nearly 90 Blu-ray movies and ZERO games. Not that aren't some decent titles now, but I bought it for, and still use it, strictly for 1080p HD goodness.
For the titles that I don't buy, Netflix is my friend.
And they're not as expensive as the price you've posted. If you're buying it as a BD player, with the occasional game thrown in, you don't need the 80GB model. And even now, after nearly 2 years on the market, it's still the best buy for a BD player. Sony has frequent firmware updates, which have been great. Each one has provided either a new feature and/or has stabilized an already solid console.
If you've got a Costco membership, check out their bundles. Most of them are game-focused, but it's the only place I've seen the consoles listed under MSRP. You could always move the game and/or extra controller on eBay to offset the cost. (You do need one of the controllers for firmware upgrades.)
Also, since the extra BD remote is Bluetooth, it's not compatible universal IR remotes. The solution I have found is the NYKO Blu-Wave remote. It uses a receiver that plugs into one of the 4 USB ports on the front of the PS3. My Logitech Harmony One remote (once programmed) saw it instantly, and it has been a GREAT purchase.

I imagine the PS3 is the route I'll take, but the Bluetooth remote thing is kind of a pisser.
Is the Harmony One the most recent of Logitech's UR's? I've got an 880 (that I can no longer program because my sister's kid threw it and the USB port broke off of the pcb) and I'll need to get a new one when I buy the new rig. Is the One any better than just replacing my 880?
I have heard that the PS3 is still the best blu-ray player on the market.

I work in the DVD/Blu-ray business and we always use the PS3 as the player to test our discs. Best player on the market and one of the cheapest.
Logitech has a "better" version, but I replaced my 880 with the H1. That Blu-wave USB/remote item I posted will work with the the entire Harmony line. When setting up the PS3, I used the NYKO Blu-Wave setting, and it locked right up. The great thing is is that it's only 15 bucks.Quote:

The PS3 is not the cheapest bluray player anymore.
The main problems with PS3 as a player.
1. Does not come with a comfortable remote. Yes the controller works as a remote but it is crap.
2. No real off button. You have to scroll through a menu to turn it off.
3. No led bezel on the actual unit. Meaning you cannot tell how long the movie is or other info on that are on standalone bezels.

The Panasonic above is $243 and apparently the best standalone 1.1 player available.
Yes the PS3 has advantages such as having a hard drive and being 2.0 compliant and I am glad I got it mainly because I am a game player and want to try out some PS3 exclusives.
