Low kicks defeated him. After the 10 characters, the game started over. Never made it to see if the game repeated itself a third time.
It took me about 20 hours. I don't think I could've beaten the game without the ability to Save State. I died at least 250 times. Incredibly frustrating. I will say that once I started leveling up beyond level 4 sword/magic/life, the game started to become pretty fun. The boss battles were surprisingly easy but each palace was increasingly more difficult/unforgiving.
Overall I have a much better appreciation for the game now that I've played through it from start to finish.
Zelda 2 became a lot easier for me when I over-leveled. Slogging through those random encounters for 2 hours made everything else easier.
I vaguely remember doing all I could to avoid the random encounters, because of what a boring pain they were. I borrowed the game from a friend because I heard how bad it was, but apparently felt the need to win it. Any Zelda got a lot more doable once you built up the number of hearts you have, so that was always the first bidness I attended to. That and getting the boomerang. I was the boomerang masta. Fun times.
After much internal hemming and hawing, my next classic conquest will be the legendary Sega Genesis platformer, X-Men.
I was a huge fan of the X-Men growing up and this game looked cool as **** but then I tried to play it and I died, and died and died. I think I made it to Asteroid M once but I never conquered the damn thing. So I shall give it another go. Wish me luck!
Forgot about this one until I saw it in the back of a pickup truck on the 405 freeway today. Paperboy!

Hey, Look! Nearly Three Hours of NES Start Screens in Alphabetical Order
Maniacal Laugh, Maniacal Laugh, Maniacal Laugh
i still play Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Sonic & Knuckles on a PC re-release. i bought a usb saturn controller just for it!
also found a working Saturn emulator and every now and then i'll play some Radiant Silvergun. shooters were always my favorite. RPGs 2nd, but i don't have the patience anymore. i tried starting Shining Force III again but it doesn't have the same appeal to me when i was a kid... i wonder if i'll feel that way about Panzer Dragoon Saga, but i sold my copy way back and it was in japanese cause the import was so much easier to obtain at release (and months earlier!)
my Saturn still works btw! unfortunately my Dreamcast doesn't, Skies of Arcadia needs a re-release or a sequel dammit
