So...how much effort (grinding) is it going to take to build out characters?
the primary reason I quit wow, I wanted to pvp at the highest level possible without having to constantly work to level/make money/etc. It's easy to say "just go do dailies" but even the dailies take an hour or two, and that's RL time wasted when all I want to do is hunt down the other faction and kill them.

They've really emphasized throughout the entire game's development that they don't want the game to be a gear grind, and they want you to be able to PvP from level 1 straight up to level 40. I would expect it to be far more forgiving, entertaining and polished as PvP goes than what you experienced in WoW. When the NDA drops and FootKnight and I can give some better info, I'll be sure to pass it on.
I wasted a good chunk of my life playing WoW. After a while, the whole concept just gets boring. The fact that there's no real end to the game makes it redundant. Also, you get to a point where it's a competition of gear... and if you don't put in the hours that the nerds with no life do, you fall behind and can't even participate in arena battles and instance runs. Ultimately you have a couple of level 70 characters that are virtually useless. I fear that this game will eventually lead to that as well. Just like WoW and EQ did. I think I will pass on mmorpgs.
Looks cool though. I expect this to be better than AoC and LOTR.
Yeah please do. if I can make this game a "casual" enterprise for me, then my curiosity is piqued. If it turns into WoW, where the unadulterated pure hell is leveling by yourself from 1-70, begging guildies for "run throughs" on their toons for your alts, and not being able to pvp effectively until you've not only hit level 70, but suffered through having your head kicked in to have enough honor to cash out half-way decent weps...then ****ing forget it.
I just want to pvp, and not have being "good" at PvP rely on spending 90% of my game time preparing myself for said pvp.
From what I've read, it is a big part of the design philosophy here to build the game so it is accessible to casual players. For instance, while in WoW you often had to rely on finding a group to finish certain quest lines and dungeon quests (which was a PAIN if you didn't have a guild), WAR instead has what are called Public Quests. Basically, imagine one of those tough elite bosses you have to kill and you come upon a group of 5 people already working on him. In Wow, this would be an "Oh ****, I'm too late, AND I'll have to find a group." In WAR, you can just start beating on the guy, or healing the other players and when the mob dies, you WILL get credit for it. Kind of takes the concept of doing elite quests, but not forcing you into the pain that is organizing a whole group to do it.
What I can tell you about pvp is that your leveling gear should be fine for engaging in pvp at all levels. If you prefer to fight in lower level pvp, you will not see people with 2000 more hit points than you wielding dual purple swords with mongoose enchants, or anything of that like. You WILL be able to get better gear through your pvp actions and probably some upper level PvE, but it won't be anything like the honor grinds or constant raiding that WoW featured.
Bleh, I'm up in Arrowhead for a few more hours. I can't wait to get home and finish the last 15% of my download so I can get a real glimpse of what they've done.
The NDA has officially been lifted and FootKnight and I can pretty much give the lowdown on this game.
I've been in beta for the last two weeks, and I am seriously blown away by the job Mythic has done. I will recognize myself as biased, being a hardcore Dark Age of Camelot fanboy, but Warhammer Online is a blast, and they've done a fantastic job of bringing together great ideas from DAOC, WoW, Lord of the Rings Online, City of Heroes, and making a great, fun MMO.
I've decided not to create a massive post on my experiences with the game and the features you can expect to find in it, mostly because I'm not sure if there's enough interest. So if anyone is interested in WAR and wants the lowdown on any aspect of the game, post below and I'll give you my best impressions and thoughts. If any of you are playing the game and want to group up with my friends and I, we'll be playing on the Order side and would love to have you.
As to specifics like Leatherface asked about Player vs. Player. Here are my experiences in lower level pvp.
First, skill is far more important than gear. If you know how to play your class, which classes you're strong against, which you're weak against, you'll be successful. Gear, of course, DOES help you, but it is nothing like WoW where a toon in purples could sit there and just use auto attack and you might as well sit down and wait to die.
Second, the better gear easily comes to you from your participation in the large-scale public quests, and from your participation in pvp. Additionally, the normal quest rewards are substantial enough, at least at lower levels, to often be better than even that loot.
Third, you can participate in pvp scenarios or open field pvp in every zone in the game. For example, from level 1-11, you can join a "Capture and Hold the Victory Point" 15 vs 15 type instanced pvp zone, or you can run out to the border of the zone and compete in open battles. I did the latter last night and it was a blast. Running through the streets and happening upon an enemy player, then proceeding to beat the hell out of each other for the next pulse-pounding two minutes easily beat ANY pvp experience I ever had in WoW. Also a cool feature is that you can join in the instanced scenarios at any level, 1-11, and it will rank up your stats to be competitive if you are level 1-7 (i.e. you are not just cannon fodder if you go into a battleground at a low level).
I have not experienced higher level battles yet, but based on what I saw, and my experiences from Dark Age of Camelot, higher level pvp should be on par, save with you having more abilities to draw from.

Hows the leveling?
Ive got school full time, a relatively active social life, a couple of jobs, a band Im trying to get off the ground, and a pregnant wife. I love pvp, but dont want to spend too much time leveling and grinding for loots. How are those aspects of the game?

I was able to get leveled from 1-10 in probably 8-10 hours of played time. I can't give you figures on the upper tiers right now, but it is on par with what you would expect from the genre. Public Quests and RvR give a good chunk of experience, so depending on how you personally decide to go about leveling, you could see the time go up or down from there.
One of the cool features of the instanced RvR scenarios is you queue up for them, continue working on quests, enter into the scenario when prompted, and when you are done, it will spit you back out to the exact place in the world you were hunting before. No more having to go back to the capitol city to enter pvp anymore!
And with all the options you have, there maybe isn't quite the push to HAVE to get to 40 in this game, as you can experience the full pvp and pve goodness throughout each tier (including gear, pvp rewards, etc...). Casual players and players with lives were definite considerations in the game's development, in my perspective.
