    Default Any Social Workers About?

I'm specifically looking for one who may know the ins-and-outs of finding assisted living facilities in the San Fernando Valley for elderly people who have no money.

    Anyone here?

Best place to get a referral is the social worker at your local hospital.

Generally speaking the destitute individual is placed on Medicaid and is place in a skilled nursing facility (referred to as a SNIFF). Instead of having a small bedroom to themselves, they will share the small bedroom with at least one other person. You may or may not have a choice where the individual is placed. If you do, check out the facility for how other boarders look, for urine smells, how the caretakers respond to your questions, etc. Go at lunch time to see the food and how the people are assisted while eating. Lastly ask (in the parking lot- where they are free to talk) the children that are visiting their aged parents what they think of the facility. Good luck.

    Thanks.

We moved my Mom in almost three years ago. It has absolutely sucked for many many reasons. Now, we (as in me, MotherPuck, and our daughter) are planning a move to Phoenix, which will happen in early 2015. Mom will NOT be coming with us.

Sorry to hear this, I know how hard it can be.

With you being so far away then you want to tell the facility you will pay for installing a phone in your mom's room (if she is not comfortable with a cell phone) so you can communicate with her. If she's used to reading the newspaper, have it delivered to the new home. Make a list of things she will and won't eat to share with facility.

I would discreetly tip ($100 to each) of my Mom's primary caretakers on Christmas and Mothers and Fathers day because they were a husband and wife team who made very little and lived at the facility for free room and board. Best $400 bucks I spent every year. They would give mom her favorite foods, extra attention, phone me immediately with medical changes, report what visiting doctor said, etc.
