I used to sell my cars on my own via "The Recycler" and "Auto Trader" back in the day, but my last two cars I've purchased, I just bit the bullet and took a hit on my trade-in to the dealership. To me, it was pretty much worth it, that might sound weird, but dealing with all the flakes and potential scammers when trying to sell my last vehicle was a nightmare.
So shocking update, listed the car on Craigslist on Friday, got an email on Sunday, sold the car today. Negotiation was painless as can be and it turned out to be a local business owner helping out his daughter. I took a few hundred off when we signed the papers and asked them to remember that the next time they had a chance to help someone out.
Only other thing of note was you do have to get a current smog as a seller per califonia law, but not for trade.
I'm sure there are shady people out there, but there's honest ones too.
sold my F-250 3/4 ton back in 03. put a for sale sign on the front, side and back window. it was gone 2 days later at 200 more than what I was gonna ask. the guy just made me an offer.
oh, and it was parked in front of my house.
sold my '96 F150 XLT with a shell in the back, for less than I asked for based on the Blue Book value. I had been trying to get rid of it for a few months. it was a nice truck.
I BELIEVE I'll have another beer!
