You're right, this is total bull****! We'll have to get the transponder, cuz we drive to L.A. maybe 2x a month on the 110 (cuz the 5 sucks even worse!!)

Why not attack some real highway jobs that would make some sense, like extend the 105 to the 5 or widening the 5 like OC did?

And so, if we don't go to L.A. some month, we'll still get charged $3 just because we could have gone there...!

This reminds me of ticketmaster charging me a "convenience charge" so I can print MY tix on MY printer.

We have to pay for the transponder, then pay to maintain the thing that reads the transponder. Great.

The Fastrak ties into your Metro TAP card, if you have one. If you use your TAP enough, the maintenance fee is waived. I don't know if there are other benefits, but that's one.

The fee is also waived even without the TAP card if you use the Fastrak often enough. I'm not sure what the exact number is, and I'm too lazy to look it up right now, but between my MTA riding and my 110 driving, I don't think I'll ever need to pay the fee.

Sounds like an absolute joke. Who approved this crap? The only time I need the 110 is when I'm going to Staples, but that's before the toll road (coming from Monrovia). So thankfully, it won't affect me.

I saw the KTLA morning news this morning for traffic while getting ready and holy crap, traffic looks like hell. It was nothing but solid red thanks to the toll road.

The ride this morning cost me a little over $5 and shaved a bit more than 20 minutes off my average drive. I traveled NB on the 110 from Redondo Beach Blvd. I would have preferred to spend that $5 for a day pass on the train and bus, but I need my car tonight. All in all, I'm happy with it for now.

    I think it's 4 times a month.... I'm not 100% sure about that.

    Edit: yup ...4
Are there any monthly fees associated with having a FasTrakŪ account?
Yes. A $3 monthly account maintenance fee is assessed. The fee can be waived with a minimum of four one-way trips on the Metro ExpressLanes in a month. The one-way trips can be any combination of paying a toll, carpooling toll-free, or eligible transit trips. The fee is automatically waived for customers enrolled in the Equity Plan. NOTE: The fee will not begin until AFTER the I-10* ExpressLanes open in early 2013.

I go to LA maybe a dozen times a year but almost always with a 2nd person, so in theory I would never pay tolls. So I don't have a TAP card.

The other thing that is stupid is I would qualify for the program to get a discounted transponder with no maintenance fees based on income but it's only for LA County residents. I guess poor Orange County residents don't need to drive to LA.

Oh, OK, so IF the games start up again we would definitely travel more than four times a month, thereby bypassing the monthly fee. That makes it slightly less irritating.

[QUOTE=EshootzEscorez;2599928]They're trying to alter your transportation choice through user fees.

"Metro ExpressLanes is a pilot, one-year demonstration program overseen by Metro, Caltrans and several other mobility partners that have joined forces to develop a package of solutions to improve traffic flow and provide enhanced travel options on the I-10 and I-110 Freeways in Los Angeles County."

    Metro ExpressLanes

I predict that after the one year test, it will be declared a success regardless of whether or not it effectively improves the flow of traffic on either freeway.......because it will effectively improve the flow of revenue.

It's a cash grab....if it makes tones of money they will do it on more fwy's.

They are adding lanes to the 5 NB up to the 14 fwy, the construction and detours are a real pain.
