none of my plants are in the ground. they're in ceramic planters and plastic cans, like the ones pictured above.

yesterday I started using the fish fertilizer to try and get some of the failing plants a boost, if that's what the fert is supposed to do? it smells like a fish factory out there.

then I took the strawberry planter off the ground and placed it on a table that was used for flowering vines (which never lasted long anyway). hopefully the berries will get better.

Just cycled half the maters. Yanked 4 dozen carrots and half a dozen TUrnips I hadn't eaten yet and reloaded. Reloaded the Summer Squash and Zukes.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

Hey Mark, ceramic pots are not a good idea for most fruit/veggie bearing plants unless the inside of the pot is watertight.

Also, fish fert isnt going to really help your blooms either. Its more of a maintenance fertilizer used to keep the soil chemistry nominal. You need a bloom booster with high Phos like Green Light Super Bloom which has an N-P-K of 12-55-6. You can get it at any of the big box stores. Its great stuff and you'll see a mass of blooms in a week after application. Check your Nitrogen levels too. If its too high, your plants will look nice and green and be huge but wont bloom and set fruit.

Give these things a shot. You'll be amazed with the bloom booster.

Made some pasta sauce last weekend with the week's harvest:

I'm still getting fruit from my 1st planting, but am starting a second batch now - mostly with more Romas.

My entire second batch is short season stuff. 60 to 75 days.

I still have Heirlooms producing, and the Celebrities just hit their stride and are going to town, some of which have started growing over the fence so my neighbor can start picking them as she chooses as opposed to me dumping a bag on her every other week. I prefer those to Romas.

I should have gone with short season stuff, but I'm growing this all from seeds as I got some San Marzano heriloom seeds earlier this summer. They're damn tasty, especially when roasted. The lemon drops are amazing too - I was going to make a salsa out of them, but they all got eaten before I could. They're like candy.

Try Black Cherry next time Euch. They're a goddamn explosion of sweet and briney awesomeness. I'm definitely making them a yearly sow.

Well, my growing season just ended concerning tomatos. Last week we had a early fall blow drop down from Canada taking the night time temps from 74 to 52 degrees. Thats all she wrote for the tomatoes to set new blooms. Any current blooms that dont have fruit will need to be chopped off so the plant can focus its remaining mana on the still growing fruits. Lots of fruit still on the vine, just no more new ones. :(

Peppers should be good for another month and they'll shut down also. Sigh.

I hate it when this happens but tis time to start looking at cool weather plants like Kale, Lettuce and Cabbage.

anyone saving the seeds when finishing off the white peaches, black plums, black cherries, etc? I've saved a handful and been thinking of planting a few in large barrel planters.
