The Virginia Lakes and Twin Lakes area are great places to camp, hike, Mt Bike and fish. They are not to awful far of the 395 and in the Mono Lakes area. There are good Free National forest campsites heading up to them. The camp site are rustic, pit toilets and well water. You could take a small travel trailer to them, but tent camping works best. Up near the lakes themselves, there are your full facility camp grounds that cost per night with trailer pads and full hook ups.
That whole area, in general, is one of my favorite spots on the planet. Have a great time.
p.s. you may want to check with the local Forest Service office for availability for the pay camp sites the closer you get to Labor day.
Bears are always a concern. They know what an ice chest is and will open your car like a tuna can to get at it. Camp bear safe. Oh, The Sierras make their own weather, I've been snowed on more than once in the Eastern Sierras in August.
Fantastic. I was looking at some of the loops over at Oh Ridge. I have a bear canister and there's a bear box in each campground there so, not too worried about them, but curious about the roaming they do that time of year. I know they tend to run up into the hills during hunting season...but I don't even know when that is so...whatever. :)Quote:

We would go to Bridgeport every year for the fourth of July week to vacation and the season opener with my dad.
So, ended up at june lake. Went to momo lake today and ran into a couple of folks from slovenia. Naturally, I brought up kopitar. They got incredibly excited, told me all about where he lives, where he's from, then proceeded to invite me to come and visit and stay with them. They even gave me business cards to get in touch with them "when I come". Very very nice people. Just sharing. :)
I was thinking of taking a trip out to Highland Lakes up in the eastern sierras on sept 28th. anyone familiar with that area have any tips or advise as to weather this is a good time of year to go there?

Sept-Oct is considered the wildfire heavy part of the year in this part of the state. it can be either hot and dry or cold and well, maybe dry. it does get bone-chilling cold at night even if it was too warm in the day.
