Nothing fancy on the tech side. I have an "aux" HDMI cable coiled up under my TV stand. I string it over to my Macbook and connect through a MonoPrice lightning-HDMI adapter. My Macbook recognizes it as a 1080p monitor and automatically adjusts the resolution to 1920x1080.

I've been a cord cutter for 9-10 years now. I refuse to pay for 100+ channels I'm never going to watch.
What VPN service do you use? How much does it cost? I would love to get GCL but the blackouts are extremely annoying. I have a roku box which I used for GCL when I was in SF, would I be able to connect to that through a VPN?

I use Hide My Ass. I think I paid $79 for a year, but it's on sale for $59 for a year right now. You'd have to configure your router to go through the VPN, but it would work.

Television normally crops the outer edges of the image. The state of having more image than is being displayed is called "overscan." I'm not sure if there's always a Windows equivalent, but on Mac, there's a checkbox in the displays preference pane that allows the computer to compensate for that. However, if your television has the option to show the image full frame instead (most current TVs do), it's better to make the adjustment on your television.

You need to select the right display resolution on the TV in the display settings of your computer, whatever that happens to be.

That said, my suggestion would be to get DirecTV, if for no other reason that in my opinion, they compress the HD signal less than other providers and the picture looks significantly better. As for the phone, get something like Magic Jack. $40 a year and you're done. Or some other VOIP solution. Why pay $50 a month for a land line, it seems like flushing money down the toilet in this day and age. Four years ago we moved and AT&T failed to show up for the install appointment three times. My wife said **** it, I guess we don't need a land line. We haven't missed it.

Very true. When I switched to Direct, still had my Cox receivers and compared the two. Direct is a better pic than Cox.
