guess if that's true, then the airline won't be allowed to fly here for a while til they get their culture **** straightened out, again. and I had never heard of Asiana, aside from KAL, til that crash.

on a different subject, I grew up with forks knives and spoons pointing up just for the cleaniness factor rather than those ends pointing down and picking up the dirt and grime at the bottom of the strainer. except if the knives are sharp then I point those ****ers down or lay them flat in the basket. I'm not Asian either.

    Patently untrue.

Vref (landing reference speed) is based upon weight and configuration in all transport category aircraft. For a normal landing (ie normal flaps and at or below max certified landing weight) Vref in all aircraft will range from the mid 110knots when really light to 150 knots when at max landing weight. The range of these speeds is required to be similar from one type to the next by regulation (CFR title 14 part 25.125 sub part b, precisely) and by the limitations of available runway lengths world wide. For those reasons, ALL transport category aircraft are designed to fly similar approach speeds. How they accomplish this is by designing an appropriate wing (planform and airfoil) and high-lift devices like flaps and slats. So all large transport category aircraft will have similar landing speeds.

At my airline, our approach speed is usually Vref+5kts, and we cross the threshold of the runway slowing from that speed to a touchdown at Vref (or slightly less, actually). If winds are gusty, we add half the steady-state wind component plus all the gust factor (rounding up) to maximum of Vref+20. So if the winds are 16kts gusting to 25, our approach speed is Vref+17kts. As far as I know, other airlines operate in a similar manner.

The testimonial that I posted from the former simulator instructor has gone viral from where I quoted it, which was where it was originally posted. I received three emails just today from friends who had seen it and forwarded it to me.

    Internet.

I need to correct the source, however. It was emailed to me as a quote from my union's forum. Having gone back and re-read it, I now realize that it was not directly from my coworker (whom I thought had written it). Rather it was from his older brother to him (my coworker) in an email, and he reposted it on the union boards.

yikes, i've flown korean air. my cousin flies KAL and asiana frequently for business and he has no intention of flying anything else.

as for forks and knives sticking up in the dishwasher, i do it. no biggie because i'm the only one who ever unloads it. i don't like the tines and stuff getting caught in the strainer. i also pick up the whole utensils basket and put it on the counter above the drawer when i'm unloading it so it's not like i'm leaning down awkwardly and blindly poking around in the machine.
pencils and pens, i might leave with the points sticking up because i have a nice ceramic cup holding it and don't want to leave marks. no one's ever poked themselves on it, but i don't really use a lot of pencils so it's not like there's an arsenal of sharp pointy objects waiting to injure anyone. we mostly use pens here and when we do, i try to unclick the pens, twist them closed or cap them.
i'm asian. none of the above has anything to do with me being asian. i didn't learn any of this from my family because my mom doesn't even use her dishwasher. she hand washes everything. she always has her pencils and pens lying around all over the place, too. her desk is a f***ing mess. it's a wonder i'm so obsessively organized because i sure as hell didn't get it from her.

lol. i wasn't offended. just saying i do the same but i think it has less to do with being asian than it does about being particular about certain things. you know, like how i constantly tell my husband to put the toilet paper roll in with the paper coming in over and not under. and how the only reason i request the seat be down and not up is because when i was a wee 5 yr old, i fell in the toilet in the middle of the night into a cold jarring abyss of terror thanks to my dad who to this day still leaves the seat up.
anyway, i see that you see that it's more common than you thought. it's all cool.

At first I was thinking the entire box of used TP had fallen on me but thank you for your agreement on common stuff, I thought I had been around the world (block) a couple of times but there is always stuff to learn about you girls. I do agree with the new TP roll coming over not down, sorry to here about your abyss story, must of been horrifying at such a young age, to bad it didn't end up like the movie. Got to learn something everyday, you go girls.
    Yo,me cool too.
