    Default dishwasher...

anyone have a good one to recommend? i want one that's quiet, has a stainless steel interior but most of all, doesn't need much (if any) pre-rinsing and gets all the food and grime off. i have my eye on a maytag but not sure if it'll do that whole "no need to pre-rinse" thing. also considering ge profile but i'm not sure if those are just overpriced fancy looking appliances and not actually much better than a regular ge in terms of function. i'm replacing a ge that is about 11 years old and died on me a couple years ago.

I would suggest Mrs.X but she doesn't have a stainless steel interior.

I've installed a lot of dishwashers in a few lower upper class homes (people with money but not filthy rich). Most install a Bosch, Miele or GE Monogram. With the most popular being the Bosch and next Miele. All three of those units tend to be very quiet and run without the need for an air gap.

I have a middle-of-the-road Kenmore for about 6 years and I think it's great. Very quiet, to the point where I sometimes check to see if I forgot to start it. I do pre-rinse a lot, but only because it takes me 2-3 days sometimes to accumulate a full load. When I don't pre-rinse, I've been satisfied with the results. Sorry I can't help with a specific model number, but it's not a budget model nor is it an Elite model.

this is supposed to be one of my christmas gifts and my husband looked into a few different ones for me, but ultimately it's my choice. bosch was one of the ones he mentioned to me.

i don't know anything about the air gap (like what it does and didn't even know some don't need one). the one i have now has one and i kind of hate it. it's that thing that sticks up out of the sink, right? it spews water all around it and makes my faucet area covered in water instead of spitting the water straight into the sink. of course, that could be because something wasn't working right. i only noticed it doing that after the guys who remodeled my counter moved it from the right side of the sink to the left and then my washer broke a little while afterward.

now that you mention it though, my MIL has a ge monogram and i recall it not needing an air gap. i actually want one like hers, but i'm debating whether i want to spend that much on a dishwasher. (i can think of so many things i want more, but my hands are getting trashed, i'm getting lazy and this is part of the kitchen project we're doing this year).

the mieles are nice, but might be too pricey for me. i originally wanted to spend $500-1000. my husband mentioned the bosch and kitchenaid because i guess he was thinking of getting a nice one whereas his mom suggested the maytag since she hates to see me spend so much of her son's hard-earned money, lol.

i really don't want something with lots of bells and whistles, just the 3 criteria i mentioned in my first post along with reliability.
thanks everyone for the links and responses. i'll take it all into account when i make my decision.

If you're serious about not pre rinsing I would consider at least getting one with an easy to remove manual filter. I know they dump into the garbage disposal but you have to remember all that stuff is going down your pipes. We just put in a new one this year and were surprised at a few improvements over our older models in the past. Seems this rinse aid thing is a big hit with some people. I honestly don't know if it makes a difference but my wife was satisfied to have it while I was like "another thing to add besides soap?" As for the air gap if you're planning on putting it in yourself its not hard, what is harder is going from a sink that doesn't have one to needing one (talking really old sink with no garbage disposal).
Another thing to consider, when we were in the store with our boy, I would pull out the bottom tray as if I was going to load some dishes. Then I'd let him come over and see what I was doing. On over 70% of the models he could take the wire basket out of the bottom tray with a small nudge. I mean literally knock it askew. Be sure there's some kind of track to keep that thing from your little one killing all your dishes. If you haven't been using one I'm sure she'll want to investigate.

Here's why I would never buy a Bosch again...

Why isn’t my brand new Bosch dishwasher drying the dishes? | Les Jones

Yes, my hot water heater was turned up enough and yes I CONSTANTLY reloaded the thing with jet-dry and yes I ALWAYS had to dry my dishes when it was done. Only had it for a short time and I was so happy when I got rid of it.
