Finally did it! It's DEAD!
I finally killed our first Dyson DC07 Animal. It took 8 solid years to do it but it's officially D.E.A.D. I smoked the motor last night on a Littlest Pet Shop toy (tool of the devil!).
What a fantastic piece of engineering that vacuum was. Before it, I would have to replace vacs around one every 12-16 months. Hoovers, Bissell, Eureka, all would burn out or start to denigrate after a year. Duct tape and bungee cords would be the most used accessories after a year with those inferior brands. Not that Dyson. The only thing I ever had to replace on the Dyson was the HEPA filter, Belt, and canister latch. Grand total of $20 bones worth of stuff. Yes, there was a bungee holding the canister on as of this past Christmas. Yes, there was Duct tape around the neck of the hose where dry rot had set in. Yes, there was a strip of duct tape covering a crack in one of the 'cyclone' tubes because of brittle plastic BUT 8 years into ownership, not 1 year!
After a quick search for replacement parts online last night to give her her first overhaul, I deemed the costs ($250+ for Motor, Canister, hose, brush & brush mount and small, misc bits) to replace the required parts would put me too close enough to the cost of a new machine ($425 for a DC40) that I decided to hand her to the coroner, Waste Management, last night. Before placing her on the curb, I put a sign on her saying "Free to a new home. Needs $250+ in parts but has run like a champ for 8 years." Much to my surprise (actually not, we have lots of trash pickers here in my hood...or "recyclers" as they like to be called), she was GONE! Hope someone gets another 8 years out of that vac, she sucked like a Champion!

Hopefully I can get the same milage out of the new DC40 because it doesnt seem to be the same build/material quality as the old girl. We'll see. I almost went with a DC33 because it looked to be pretty close to the DC07.
