All good advice guys...thanks. Already hit wal-mart for rubbermaid tubs and will probably need to go back for more. Going over the hill Beerman, going to the West Hollywood area. Been practically living down there anyway with Kingsqueen being down there. Like any move, pros/cons...gonna take some getting used to. As far as purging...got 5 giant garbage bags going to Goodwill this morning. This is work though. Damnitall. Thanks again guys for the advice. Sorry about the tendon P-D.
Just moved from house to house this weekend. Really close to the old place, and it was still hard work.
My tips:
1. Put everything in boxes before you start to move. Makes the moving day so much easier.
2. Bribe people with beer to help.
...that's all I got.
When I move someone will have a fully furnished house because everything is staying. I will take the pictures and my kids everything else stays, I might take the wife unless they include her in the closings costs.
Holy cow! This cannot be more true. I don't what it is, but I've been duped more than once when helping a friend move when they haven't had their **** all packed and ready. Guess my line of questioning should go from "When are you moving?" to "When will all your **** be packed up and ready to go so I don't have to **** with it for 5 hours before it's actually ready to be moved?"
Good luck on the move, jerseydevil!
Yeah my uncle wont help anybody move unless they have completely packed up everything.

Pay somebody to do it for you. Take a trip for a couple of days (San Diego would be nice) then return to your new place.
If you can afford it, this is truly the way to go. I moved from Mich to Cal back in 79 myself. The sign on the truck spoke volumes. "An Adventure in Moving". When I moved from Altadena Ca to Idaho, I hired Andy's moving and storage. Very professional, they had their **** together. And I mean together. I'm hyper anal about logistics and details, I'm a rank amature compared to these folks. It wasn't all that more expensive to hire them as opposed to doing it again cross country. And the extra 500 bills for them to do it as opposed to doing it myself was soooo, worth it.
This is exactly why I have a sticker on my trucks that say yes this my truck, and no, I won't help you move.

This is pretty funny. Me and my buddy always get stuck moving people for whatever reason (nice guys, suckers, etc). He told me he would be willing to chip in $20 to whomever wants to move next time and wants all of us to do the same so they can hire professionals.
My best advice is to put everything in boxes according to what room they should be in. Label them with a colored post-it note and tape it on each box so it doesn't come off: yellow is the kitchen, blue is the master bedroom, etc.
On your new digs, put a big colored paper on each room that corresponds with that label.
Get a ton of friends to help. Tell them you'll serve pizza and beer for lunch. The more the better because if you only have a few people, they will gripe.
When you get to the new place, tell everyone to look at the color of the label on the box and put it in the correct room.
if you do hire pros to move, make sure they have a lot of good references (such as x-wing's glowing review). the same friend of mine whose stuff suffered water damage in DC had a company move her stuff from DC to portland, OR recently and they supposedly couldn't get her stuff out to the west coast for at least a month. it was especially tough for her, i'd imagine, since she has a baby under 1 yrs old and needed a lot of the baby gear.
i've also heard some companies will hold your stuff hostage unless you pay them a ransom.
