Thank you guys for all of the outstanding responses. It means alot!

I think I have a preliminary game plan in mind. Maybe it isn't so much about "re-inventing" or giving up on my dream as it is expanding my horizons and becoming a more well-rounded individual both personally and professionally. The more fields I give myself a chance in, the better chance I have of landing in the right place.

What I find pleasing as well as admirable is your willingness to make that change. For many it isn't an option (mortgage, spouse, kids, etc.) and there's just no workable room for such a plan. Either that or maybe they don't possess the fortitude to pursue it. But you seem to be at a good point for making strides.

Whether or not you "reinvent" yourself means less in comparison to your actual happiness and contentedness. Those are the goal. I don't know how old you are, USCKings, but I can tell you from personal experience, when i got into my forties I finally realized who I am. And THAT, is what eventually will steer you best.

Hopefully you'll find the right direction, because if you don't, you run the risk of being miserable like so many people who pass you on the street each day.

I'm rooting for you! Keep us updated on your progress!

You have just crossed the line Dave. You are thinking like an adult. Welcome aboard..

I wonder sometimes reading your stuff, if you remember the first p.m. I sent you 7 or so years ago?

I guess this qualifies......I spent the better part of 3 years in high school taking drafting classes (in the early 80's pre-CAD), 8 years in the CSU system getting my BS in CAD all the while thinking I could get a job in the aerospace industry as an draftsman or designer after I graduated. Well after all of the defense and aerospace firms started to leave CA in the early 90's and after being turned down time and time again for a job/internship I decided it was time for a change. I actually went back to an early childhood dream of mine.....becoming the popo. I guess you can say that the dream dream never really went away but was put on the back burner. When my mother was around there was no way that she would let me join the popo because she worried about me so much. She passed away while I still was in college but I never gave much thought to the popo until the job outlook for CAD was getting very bleak. I guess you could say I had a mid life crisis at 26 and I decided to give the popo thing a try. If I didn't try, I knew that I would always regret it. I did make sure that I got my BS in CAD since that was one thing no one could take away from me.

After many rejection/qualification letters again I began to doubt if I had made the right choice. 2 years later at the ripe old age of 28 I got hired by Pasadena and now 17.5 years later I am in the best job I have ever had working for Anaslime.

I guess all I can say is follow your heart and don't let anyone discourage you. Trust in yourself that you will know when it is the right time to make change in your life. It may take you many times but someday you will find that dream career that you have been searching for.

We are the Samurai, the warrior elite who protect and serve. Armed and armored from head to toe, masters of our personal weapons and bound by Honor, Duty, Loyalty, and Honesty. We walk the long path into the places society would prefer forgotten, and chase those demons that most would run from screaming in fear. We are the Samurai.

So I was somewhat in your boat. In high school I was all about sports and thought that would be where I would end up. Of course it wasn't where I went as when I graduated from college I was just looking for a job (25 years ago). As it happens I ended up finding an entry level job in aerospace and just celebrated 25 years in the company I started with. I can honestly say it was a great decision. Met my wife here, bought 4 different homes (one is a rental and the others were trade-ups to our present home), had a company paid transfer to better part of the country to raise my kids, etc. All in all it has been good. I can even say that now I have come full circle and really love what I do - manage a team of 17 people of various ages. The thing I love is helping people achieve their goals so I think I am in the right place now. It took a lot of time and self reflection to come to this point and as X-Wing says also thinking like an adult.

If I were you, with your writing skills and love of sports/journalism, I would try the corporate life as a PR professional. Lots of jobs in corporate PR. And if you get into a company like mine, where they are a Fortune 50, they spend a great deal of $$$ on PR and video/radio/print media (my company even has their own in-house video company that produces a lot of corporate vid). I also had the experience as having worked as a second job in the pro sports biz for about 15 years and I know how hard it is to work in and break in. The problem is there are 10 (or 20) qualified people for all the jobs and once a job is gotten tons of people are trying to take your job and will sell out their own grandmother/mother to get the gig. Plus the pay sucks unless you are at the top.

Good luck in whatever you decide. I'm rooting for you!

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

Default Has Anyone Here Re-invented Themselves? (Serious Question)

7 years ago I went from being a warehouse working, truck driving, 2 packs of smokes a day smoking blue collar worker, to the white collar web/print designer I am now.

Or in short, I sold my soul to Satan.

    Raising hand here.

After 25+ years as an engineer, I was laid off by the firm I worked for for 19 years. The company that bought us out was heavily into residential subdivision and new urban design work, and well we all saw where that ended up in 08-09. I also found out that nobody was hiring at the time, or if they were, they wanted to pay the equivalent of a new graduate. While searching one of the headhunter sites, I saw an ad that asked "have you ever thought about owning your own business?" I figured what the hell, at least somebody would answer something I submitted. Turned out it was a franchise broker looking to match up franchises with potential owners. After doing due diligence on a few different businesses, learning how to prepare a business plan, getting rejected by a few banks, watching my UC run out, dealing with the crazy demands of another bank and the SBA, I finally became a business owner. So now I run a company that brings entertainment services to families and businesses in a tricked out van with 5 video screens. Nothing like what I was doing before.

Can't say it's been easy. Still haven't paid myself, but now at least most months I can cover my other expenses. Sometimes still have to dip into my remaining savings to make payroll, but things are slowly getting better and I'm getting busier. More importantly, more people know I'm out there, which always seems to be the hardest part of starting any business.
