    Default I dont understand Facebook

So my grandmother passed away today (Its ok, she was 91 and is in a much better place). So my family is all on Facebook doing a little online obituary. Ok. Thats a great way to remember grandma. Love it. But I dont get giving it a Like. How can you like it when someone dies, especially a family member? Sorry, I just can't give grandma a thumbs up.

I'm sorry for your loss :-(
I think in most cases like-ing has two meanings.

In good news it's like way to go!

But it can also mean "I agree with this comment/status."

People have liked R.I.P status that have honored a family member/friend in my timeline before. Most recently two years ago when in 10th grade my high school friend and classmate was killed by a drunk driver :-(

I would imagine that the "Like" is for that particular memory, or acknowledgement/agreement in wishing that she rest in peace... It isn't "liking" that she passed away.

My cousin committed suicide a couple of years back and his mom started a new Facebook page for him. It is amazing the amount of likes that page still gets. I can only imagine that this is one way of grieving for some people. Some people handle death in different ways and with the Internet being as big as it is, this is some people's only social outlet. I don't understand it either, but apparently to some this is their way of grieving and honoring their loved ones.

I don't understand one feels the need to have face book or anything else about it.

Sorry for your loss, Gnomey. 91 is a great, long, life tho. I, personally, don't "like" stuff like that cuz it seems odd to me. ilovela said it right tho, it can mean 2 things. I highly doubt anyone is actually praising the fact that your grams is gone, they're more agreeing with what's being said, agreeing with the sentiment expressed.

Agreed, it's more about honoring the memory of a person and showing support for the family.

    Sad to hear about loss.
