If you don't care about the noise, any of the major brands will do.

If you are planning to get a portable for emergencies and what not, you don't need to buy one that will power the whole house, just one with enough wattage to power the refrigerator and or freezer, a few lights at night. Just whats really needed folks. And no, your HD plasma tv has no need to work during this time.

When I landed in LA everyone was screaming BIG EARTHQUAKE COMING, that was back in '73.
We had had several good size ones thru the 80's and 90's but nothings since.
But you know it will come on December 22nd when the Mayan calendar runs out....
