We don't all want to be socially engineered.
As a fogie who grew up during the '60s, I developed a distrust for government and any other entity that would like to pry into peoples' personal lives. In the current climate of identity theft and other malfeasances, why would I want to put up a big, rotating beacon for people I don't even know to contact me?
Privacy doesn't suck.
Psychologists are losers...
Oh, wait. :O
So why would you open a Facebook profile? Maybe you'd like to have a relatively convenient avenue for re-connecting with old acquaintances. Or a place to share interesting ideas and special moments with friends and family. You can set who and when people have access to what and when. So it's not like every aspect of your life is being broadcast to the public, unless you post it and set it that way.
Also, why would someone you don't know try to contact you? Even if said unknown people are trying to get a hold of you, you can just ignore the request. Just because someone tries to contact you doesn't mean you have to respond. Better than the people you don't know finding your address in public record and knocking on your front door?
