Might be a bit south for your distance requirements, but I'm a fan of taking out of towners to Salt Creek beach:
Metered parking, plus a big old park to hang out at and do some grilling. Walk down the hill and you're at the beach. If you have kids that need to be carried around, or old folks, might not be ideal. But I like it because there are never crowds, and mostly locals (except for the folks staying at the Ritz Carlton next door).

Laguna Beach or Huntington Beach?
Damn sounded like a rough vacation, but hey sometimes life catches you offsides. Hope all is well with the Fam.
On the original topic, let's put it like this, I ****ing LOVE Laguna
Always try to get over there at least once a year. I personally like the Surf & Sand for the on the beach resort. Closer to a lot of restaurants and shops vs. Montage.
If I could afford it, I'd be living in Laguna Beach as I write this ;-)
