Well my first assumption was here was a guy who was part of a macho culture (football) and a deeply pious culture (mormonism).
He would no doubt be feeling tons of pressure from both communities to be "sowing his wild oats" or "settling down and meeting a nice girl" etc etc...
having a girlfriend who was in a coma/sick/dead is a pretty great cover story.
But the more I read about it the more it just sounded like bonkers nonsense and it keeps getting weirder. So who knows.....
it's possible he just said he met her in person to not look like a weirdo loser (particularly for an athlete) for saying he met a girl online and they have a strictly internet/phone relationship where he's never seen her except for in photos.
from the deadspin article, they added this yesterday evening:
Quote:
Update (6:10 p.m.): Manti Te'o's statement:
This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online.
sooo... he's saying now that he actually didn't meet her like he's claimed to have before...?
That would only explain a part of this. If he is to be believed (yeah, OK), he spent a lot of time actually speaking on the phone with her. If he was the victim, I would tend to believe that he would actually spend considerable time talking to this woman on the phone. Why would someone do this for a joke? That's an awful lot of time to spend on a joke. Most people just aren't that invested in a hoax to spend the kind of time it would appear it would have required just for ****s and giggles. The story just doesn't add up.
SOMEBODY lied about SOMETHING.
