Finally, I have to ask this given current events: Is there anyone in the Kings’ locker room you think is likely to have a fake Internet girlfriend?
I don’t think so. [Penner] has the personality, but I don’t think he’d go that far.
Not sure how you mean.
If you mean that this is insignificant in the grand scheme of things, most definitely. But then, by that logic, so is virtually everything revolving around sports.
But in the world of sports, when a player from a storied university like Notre Dame elevates his game to become one of the best players in the country to lead his team to an undefeated regular season and his defense to be the best scoring defense in the nation (allowing just 10.3 points per game) facing what many believed this preseason to be one of the toughest schedules in the country, that's news. When he does all of that in a season where his grandmother and girlfriend both died within six hours of each other of cancer, it's a pretty remarkable story, even to some degree outside of the world of sports.
When it turns out that that story was a hoax, one that either fooled this incredible character or one that he took part in crafting to build this character image, that's definitely news. When this hoax was perpetuated and spread by virtually every major news network and publication in the country, it brings to the forefront so much of what is wrong with news today and can open up a very legitimate national conversation (that many of us have already been having for years) about what direction the "twitter age" is leading media towards.
So yeah, some guy having a fake girlfriend online in a vacuum may not be much of a news story. But this most certainly is.
