Best wishes for your pop's speedy recovery!
Just an update. First apologies for any doctors on the boards if I offend you but man getting answers from them - or worse their automatic assumptions! - is truly frustrating. You really do need to be your own advocate (or have someone if you can't be) in these situations.
First the basics. He is out of the medically induced coma - WOOT! He is on low dose of morphine for pain though so he is a sleep a lot of the time. But when he isn't he is aware and can smile, squeeze hands, move his legs, etc. That is all great stuff and makes me feel real good.
His trauma from the accident is stabilized, which is perfect. He is having trouble clearing his left lung though. We have to get through that hurdle and then move on to his rehibilitation. All in all things are improving.
I personally want to thank you all for your thoughts, well wishes and prayers. They mean a lot.
Hang in there buddy. It sounds like things are on the road to recovery!
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

I've met auto mechanics that are easier to work with than some doctors. Glad to hear your dad is on the mend, and hang in there!
Very glad to hear. Best wishes and give him all the support he needs.
great to hear he is doing better!
It is totally true that people in these situations do need someone to advocate on their behalf. Make sure that you have a DPOA http://ltc-continuum.com/PDF%20files/DPOA%20CALIF.pdf in place. Also depending on your fathers insurance get to know the Hospitalist that is in charge of his care for the insurance. This person will be quarterbacking all care in the hospital and stay on top of him/her to make sure that all needed care has been taken care of before discharge to skilled nursing/rehab.
Feel free to pm me if you have any questions that I might be able to help with. I am not a doc or an atty but have had experience advocating for people in hospital and nursing homes.
24diving and I still have our fingers crossed for your dad; glad to hear the good news!
WIll continue to pray for your dad's recovery.
Hey all, another update. I have to return north tomorrow so today was a big day. They got the fluid off his lung and now as long as they stay clear we will move to the next big hurdle which will be to get the trach tube out. This might happen at a long care facility but I can say finally a doctor and his case administer talked to me today with the plan forward. This is a big weight off my shoulders.
His trauma injuries were a lot worse then I was told (remember what I said about being your own advocate?!) and I had to get downright testy with a doctor today but I am satisfied they are working very hard to help my dad recover.
Appreciate all your thoughts and prayers for him. Take care all.
