I was told it's a water table issue.

It's easier to get rid of bodies out here in the west.

According to a construction buddy of mine, this is exactly the correct answer.

You can't tell me that pouring a slab and then building on top of it isn't cheaper than trenching and building a basement.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

It only occurred to me recently that they seem to be extremely rare in SoCal and in AZ.

Anybody know the reason for that?
I have a few guesses, but they don't seem right to me.
No tornadoes, so you don't need em?
More land available in the West, so most people didn't build them?
    Caliche?

    Anyone know?
And to answer the question that I think you're really asking.....yes its a good place to store the bodies. Dead hookers presumably.

In my old neighborhood in Altadena,Ca, (cira 1924), many if not all of the houses had what was called a Michigan basesment. All the homes where on raised foundations, and the "basement" on the average was about 15'x 15'. The homes when built had floor furnaces so it was easy access to install and work on them. Most how ever had had there Floor Furnaces removed and replace with either a wall furnace or an FAU. Most folks put the FAU in the basement area. The stairway to this "basement" was on the outside of the house.

Now why they were called Michigan Basements, I have know idea. I was born and raised in Michigan, and I never saw or heard of a Michigan Basement untill I moved out to California.

Anyone have an answer to that?
