In my old neighborhood in Altadena,Ca, (cira 1924), many if not all of the houses had what was called a Michigan basesment. All the homes where on raised foundations, and the "basement" on the average was about 15'x 15'. The homes when built had floor furnaces so it was easy access to install and work on them. Most how ever had had there Floor Furnaces removed and replace with either a wall furnace or an FAU. Most folks put the FAU in the basement area. The stairway to this "basement" was on the outside of the house.
Now why they were called Michigan Basements, I have know idea. I was born and raised in Michigan, and I never saw or heard of a Michigan Basement untill I moved out to California.
Anyone have an answer to that?
