I heard not-good-things from a buddy who's in the business.
HF is a decent enough place for homeowner tools. Several years ago I retiled a bathroom and shower, and their prices on drill motors, tile saws and other power tools were 50 - 75% less than HD or Lowe's. And the quality was fine - just off name brands, or brands I had never heard of (i.e. 3/4" Chicago drill motor [for mixing thinset and grout] was $40, the same name-brand drill at HD or Lowe's was $130 on sale).

If your buddy is in the business, he likely doesn't like them because they sell "cheaper tools" for much less $ and take business away from him. And if you do go there, be prepared to buy tools you would never buy if you were looking to get craftsman, makita, dewalt, etc.

and the quality of most of the tools is inferior to the major brands. the only things I buy regularly from HF are a couple of safety materials which don't break a wallet and are worthy of the lot.

It's Harbor Freight because all the tools come from the Harbor. Poor made Chinese tools and knock offs. Like you said, great for home owner tools, or tools you're only likely use a couple of times. However if you're a professional you'll want sometching more reliable and built with an overall high quality.

There is a place for everything.
