And the quality was fine - just off name brands, or brands I had never heard of (i.e. 3/4" Chicago drill motor [for mixing thinset and grout] was $40, the same name-brand drill at HD or Lowe's was $130 on sale).

If your buddy is in the business, he likely doesn't like them because they sell "cheaper tools" for much less $ and take business away from him. And if you do go there, be prepared to buy tools you would never buy if you were looking to get craftsman, makita, dewalt, etc.

There is a place for everything.
I'll echo these posts. HF is a great store for what it is. If you’re looking for Pro brand replacement tools, you'll not find them there and you’ll be dissapoint. If you’re looking for EXPENDABLE tools including basic hand tools and their work surfaces like Sandpaper, sanding disks, grinding disks, electrodes and other welding tools, sponges, chip and acid brushes...etc, you'll not find better prices. I buy these things exclusively from HF and you’d be a fool not to. The Big Box stores absolutely JOB contractors with their expendable item prices. And this is coming from someone that owned a Cabinetry business for a decade.
I have a HF store about 25 miles from my house and I make a point of swinging in every time I’m by it 6-10 times a year.

It fills a niche perfectly. Nothing more, nothing less. People that dont like the store are asking it to be something it isnt and doest claim to be. Its tantamount to hating a Ford becasue its not a Aston Martin.
