As such, the device wasn't buried as deeply the rest and it holds the dubious distinction of depositing more fallout (many nucleotides, including Iodine-131) than any other test and contaminating the most US citizens as well (as far away as Iowa and Illinois).
Mercury, Nev. made many of the instrument screens out of tantalum Element AN 73, nothing secret, they were inspected by nuclear physicists, they would spend 3 days in my office, that was fun and they were cool. The instruments would measure the antumbra, that's the shadow of the penumbra which is the shadow of the umbra which is the shadow. Only the shadow knows...

BTW, Groom lake is to the NE of this photo.

These models can be distinguished from the later SR-71s by the lack of a chine carried all the way to the nose of the aircraft; these have the original conical nose.

The second one back is a trainer, with the second cockpit visible.

I find it totally amazing that these were designed with slide rules.
The chine is a fuselage wing, in as it gives lift and control to the aircraft, a brilliant thought by Kelly that was extended on the SR-71 after testing the A-12.

BTW, Slide rules are great, but I gave those up years ago, I program all my CNC equipment in my head, I only use an editor to tell my machines what I want it to do. I'm sure all those cam programs are nice for people who don't really understand what a machine does but I know exactly what its doing.

    Yeah...old timer....who knows what the....

Old farts rule. I still use my slide rule.
