The genius of John Lautner
The most common view of the Sheats-Goldstein residence in Beverly Hills; the living room shown here has been described as the modern representation of a cave dwelling. In the daytime reverse view below, it is possible to see the angled-up portion of the pool decking around the perimeter. This was done instead of having a railing, which would have severely compromised the view of the distant skyline.
Masterful design in any endeavor utilizes elements which solve several issues simultaneously. As seen below, the deck is the roof for the master bedroom located one level down; the angled section allows for some shading of the sun and taller windows to open up the space to the view.
The direction of this view from the master bedroom is approximately the same as the daytime shot above.
Oh, to be able to afford a place like this!
