A rather long, but amazing article on what may be the most successful sales job in the history of mankind - creating the perception that a worthless rock is a thing of endless value. The article is 30 years old, BTW, but little in it is no longer true.

It took me awhile to find the date on the article. Very interesting stuff.

My first memory of a news report on the diamond industry involved a TV piece on conflict diamonds and seeing the images of an entire village of people with hacked limbs. To think that the ferocity with which people will try to control the diamond mines by doing that, and that it is all based on an artificial sentiment, just disgusts me.
