Astronaut Sally Ride dies at 61
She became the first American woman to fly in space when she rode in the shuttle Challenger in 1983. She died after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to her website.
She went home to the stars. RIP.

She was 61. Sally Ride, died today after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, according to a press release distributed by her company Sally Ride Science. She was 61. Ride rode into space on the shuttle Challenger in 1983 when she was 32, according to The Associated Press. Ride, who grew up in Encino and attended Portola Middle School in Tarzana and Westlake High School, was a physicist, the first American woman to fly in space, a science writer, and the President and CEO of Sally Ride Science, according to the company. NASA confirmed her death Monday afternoon and President Barack Obama called her a national hero, according to The Associated Press. In addition to Tam O'Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years, Ride is survived by her mother, Joyce; her sister, Bear; her niece, Caitlin, and nephew, Whitney; her staff of 40 at Sally Ride Science; and many friends and colleagues around the country, according to her San Diego-based company.[/IMG]
