In most cases you don't need to do a rafter upgrade unless they are really old. More times than not a if anything has to be redone its the comp on the roof. Of all the jobs that I've been on in the year I'm been w/ my company I've only done two rafter upgrades before an installation. The racking system and modules really aren't that heavy. And generally, we space our footing 4' OC. We're allowed to do 6' OC some times but that does put more stress on the rafters that are lagged into. It all depends.
Lets not talk about the **** the bed fest that has become of the Blythe farm. What a ****ing mess.
One great thing about solar in the Valley is that simply by installing the modules it will cool the house/attic down a bit.
