Wallets, Watches and Boots...The Man thread.

Alright Bros,

Being its slow with the lockout and RH is starting to stagnate a little, Ive decided to start a thread and topic I've been contemplating starting for a few years now. I really cant think of a proper forum to start this in so I figured I'd put it in here. Im looking at this thread as being a pre suckage Maxim, Details or The Chap (UK) without the scantily clad women and talk of enlarging your tally-wacker. So post whatever you want about anything "Man". Power tools, Guns, Boats, Cars, Fishing Gear, Clothes, Watches, Shaving Cream, Golf Clubs, Strip Clubs, Seal Clubs...anything. Reviews, bitches and complaints... Good or bad. Things we use everyday but can't find a thread/forum OR find it unnecessary to start a thread about it. See where I'm going???

What really got me thinking about making this thread right now is Wallets. I am SICK and TIRED of buying a wallet every 6 months just to have it fall apart just when it becomes broken in. I usually just go to Kohl's and buy a black or brown $25-$35 Leather Trifold with a interior ID window and photo sleeve made by either Dockers, Nautica or Kohls store brand, Sonoma. Well, Im over them. If I need to drop a C note on something that will last and is well made, I'll do it. I'd even pass over $150. I dont keep a lot of Credit Cards on me but I do keep and receive quite a few Business Cards. I have tried the separate BC fold but I end up losing it after a few days. Any suggestions? I'd like to stay with leather but If I have to go back to a Ballistic Nylon Rip Wallet like I had as a child in the 70's, I will...less the Yin-Yang or Hang Loose Shaka sign on it of course.

Ive have worn this shoe now for over a year and it is, without a doubt, thee most comfortable work shoe I have ever owned. In fact, I now own 3 pairs. I wear size 11 Wide and the Size 11 Normal width fits perfectly. The leather is so soft after the break in that it conforms to your foot width. Not only do I wear this 10 hours a day at work, It's my shoe of choice for day to day usage. I even wear it when the family takes a trip to the local amusement park. They are fantastic. BUY THEM!


And last but not least, after 40 years of wearing Levi's, Im done with them. They suck. The quality of the denim is crap and the stitching is weak. Ive had 3 new pairs blow out along the belt loops and the stitch on the outside of the legs. For $75, they are crap.

I'm a simple guy when it comes to clothing and shoes, with practicality, durability, comfort, and cost trumping what's-in-style.

I do loves me some watches, though.

My current favorite is my Nixon 51-30. It was a very generous gift from my awesome wife at Christmas, 2010. It's currently in repair (the second hand fell off and was banging around loose). I'll report back as to their customer service.

I love my 511 Tactical cargo pants and shorts, too. Nikon cameras. LWRC, Barrett, and Remington rifles. Glock pistols. Smith & Wesson revolvers. Browning shotguns for sporting applications and Bennelli shotguns for tactical stuff.

Hemi engines. My Big Green Egg smoker (a GREAT customer service company, btw).

Im also looking to buy a 3 Timepiece Auto Winder for my 2 Heuers and Omega. What I am looking at is either the Wolf Meridian 2.7 Triple Watch Winder in Black:

Anyone have experience with Wolf Design? The first one is a open case that is stackable and can run in series whereas the second is a closed case and is stand alone. I like the idea of having the case enclosed but the Meridian is a open case. Both are the same price.

Ive had to send the Tag Link Automatic in to Tag 2 times to have the crown seal and crown threads replaced because I'm constantly having to pull it and reset the date/time. It costs me $500 bones to get it fixed, sealed and recertified every time. In fact Tag scolded me for not having a auto winder. Luckily I haven't had to send in the Carrera in yet...That would kill me. The Link is my Day to day timepiece so it gets used alot. Its when I take it off for more than 3 days that I need to pop the crown and reset it.

Any advice on Auto Winders?

I have 3 other watches but I don't wear them anymore. I think my wife might have sold them on ebay because I haven't seen any of them in about 3 years.

I just recently had to replace my wallet that I had for maybe 10 years. I think it was a Fossil. Now I got, well, a Fossil. They make a nice one with a leather argyle pattern however I couldn't find it when I went to their store. Anyway, it's a nice bi-fold wallet with a couple zipper coin pouches as well. Don't like tri-fold wallets as they put weird curves on the bills. Ever try to feed a bill that's been curve pressed in all manners into a jukebox?

For shoes, I won't buy Skechers anymore. They make some cool looking kicks but they all fall apart way before they should. For nicer ones I usually go Doc Martens, and for more athletic I'll probably go Nike.

Not a big fan of Levi's. I'm fat enough as it is, I don't need a label on my ass denoting my fat ass size. Plus they are over-priced.

I don't use a wallet. I use a Tiffany's silver money clip that was a gift.

I just want to say that this is an awesome thread idea. Regarding clothes, I’m the type of guy that loves watches, wallets, nice shirts and jeans, and also the flip-flop/cargo-short polo shirt attire. My downfall is that I’m one of the cheapest people on the planet. So I mainly do without. But there are the rare instances when I do get to buy stuff for myself.

I LOVE tools. I love hand tools, power tools, bottle-jacks, creepers, flood lights, saws, drills (I know they’re power tools, but I’m on a roll). I don’t give a carp if I will only use it once, I just love the fact that I still have it. I recently decided to do a little Ikea hack to an existing buffet that the wifey and I already had. I started tinkering with it and realized that I needed to buy a circular saw. Well, with my Perrier Jouet taste on a Korbel budget, I went to Harbor Freight. It’s a little weird to go to a hardware store and buy a palm sander, circular saw & blade, paint sprayer and safety goggles, and have it be under $100. I know it’s all crap, but I was able to finish my project and it looks pretty nice. In the future (once all the credit cards are paid off) I’m going to spring for some really nice Milwaukee or Porter Cable tools cordless stuff. But for now, the Chicago Electric junk will suffice.

About wallets… I will only own Coach. I had a Coach wallet for 10 years, and it was great. I switched to the exact same wallet last Christmas thanks to my wife. Apparently it was a little warn around the edges, but in my mind was still quite serviceable. I have zero complaints about it. I have the black leather tri-fold design. It holds all of my cards and business cars easily without any issues. I think they’re about $100, which isn’t too expensive. The only bad thing is that a decent amount of their products (if not all if it) are made in China. When before they were made in the US, which I liked. Sadly they aren’t now.

Speaking of US made goods, I bought a pair of jeans about two months ago that were made here in Los Angeles. I can’t remember the name, but they’re comfortable. And they should be, because they cost me $175. This was the wife’s suggestion, so I went with it.

Anyone have any suggestions for a nice pair of dress shoes for the office? I’m wearing an old pair of Florsheim’s that I either need to get re-soled or toss. They’re comfortable, but a bit weathered. I looked up the previously suggested Timberlands, but they don’t have my size 13/14E monster. The Amazon seemed confused when I requested that size.

I’ll post more crap as I remember it.

I gotta say UG, thats one of the more bizarre reasons I've heard for choosing a bifold over a trifold...lol. I prefer a trifold because it holds more stuff and it folds up small. Ever since I had my wallet lifted in NYC back in the early 90's, I've put my wallet in my front right pocket. A trifold accomplishes this nicely.
