I can get a soldier's discount on a car at any of the Salvation Army lots... I think they raised the main price to $2400...but I know they raised the soldier prices to $800...

Find a small time used car lot owner. The key is a small owner selling used beaters, that needs money. Pay him to let you go to the car auction (I think Riverside is the big auction) when he goes. Tell him make, model, color, etc, of what you're looking for. You have to wait outside (I have snuck in with the dealer). Pay him $50-100 cash to look at engine, start it up (he should know if it's running right) and take pics of what you want, and bring you pics in parking lot. Pay him $300-500 cash if he gets the car at your highest bid. You're buying wholesale...

My Audi A6 was a lease return. I made friends with a guy at our Audi dealer here in Thousand Oaks and asked him to call me when low mileage leased cars were turned in. My car was leased by a VP at Audi USA. Their corporate HQ is in Westlake Village and all the service was done here in Thousand Oaks. Needless to say, the car was like new when I bought it and I paid exactly what I was looking to spend -- less than 30K miles for less than $30K, certified with extended warranty and service package. Car has been a dream.

Seriously, look around on the ebay motors classified section. Not the ebay motors auction section, just the classifieds. Theyre awesome. They have both Dealer and Private sales. Open up the search radius to 200 miles and see whats out there. You'll be amazed. Ive purchased 3 autos using ebay motors classifieds. 2 Bimmers (e30 M3 and e60 550) and my Truck. Good deals are everywhere, you might have to do a little more due diligence with travel but if you want a killer deal, a little extra labor can save some good bank.

Been looking at ebay and craigslist. I want a VW TDI or other and they are niche cars so prices are a premium.

Has anyone been to an auction at either of these places? How competitive do they get?
