There is so much out-of-whack with society today that I'm beginning to wonder if society is salvageable.

I pray for the families of the victims of this mass-murder, and I hope there's an especially miserable eternity in Hell for this spineless, child-murdering sack of ****.

So.... one person does something unthinkably horrible, society universally recoils in horror.... and you guys think society is the a doomed cesspool of heartless bastards?

That's not pessimism or cynicism... that's confirmation bias.

It's just too bad that the sob got out of life so easy on himself.
Would have been so much fairer had he lived; let the parents loose on him to beat him to slow agonizing death.

I'm trying to figure out why the mother would keep loaded guns (not in a secure place) around a 20 year old autism spectrum son....certainly was a recipe for disaster today.

So you are more enlightened than the rest of us are you?

It's not just one just one person, I get my cynicism from the fact this is just one ****ty episode out of countless episodes. This **** happens over and over again.

Sadly, history is on my side on this point of view.

Well I don't know how broad you casting your net... but on the whole I would argue that acts of charity and kindness far out weigh acts of violence and cruelty in the history of mankind. Choosing to focus and dwell only on the negative is a choice.

I am casting it pretty wide.

Don't get me wrong, in my personal life I've got it pretty good as you probably do too, but don't be naive: we've got it better than the vast majority of humanity, all us here do.

I don't choose to focus and dwell on the negative but it keeps thrusting itself upon me. I am usually a pretty positive guy, but I am not shocked when stuff like this happens because I know human history.

I am somewhat of a history buff and have studied all lot of stuff, so I will disagree with you: kindness and charity are the exception not the rule. History proves, beyond a reasonable doubt, that violence misery and cruelty have far outweighed the positive. Kindness and charity ( on a wide scale) is somewhat new to human history and is somewhat limited, sadly, to modern first world nations.

But even with us "civilized" folks something breaks and some jackass does something like what happened today, with alarming regularity I must add. And that justifies my cynicism that lays just below the surface of my usual happy-go-lucky persona.

I joined a group that is going to knit/crochet stuffed animals for the rest of the children at the school so they have something to hold for comfort and know that not everyone is a heartless bastard.

If anyone wants to donate patterns, supplies, or money to cover shipping the toys to Connecticut, let me know and I will put you in contact with the people in charge.
