So you think the Canucks fan base is Bonkers? (America’s Cup 2013)
I thought Vancouver’s fans were over-the-top, well I found one that makes them look like rank amateurs!
I bring you the Kiwi’s of the 2013 Americas Cup Regatta on facebook:
Any sailing fans here? If so, and you’re NOT watching the 2013 AC Regatta, you are missing THEE best Americas Cup races, ever. We are on the verge of seeing the GREATEST upset in sporting history; period and the New Zealand fans have gone ape-s*** apoplectic.
This is more about the Social Media aspect of the AC versus the actual race but if you're unfamiliar with the America’s Cup? Read more here>>> America's Cup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I have never in my life seen a fan base threaten to kill, maim, blow up and poison another team’s fan base like I have the Kiwi’s towards the Oracle Crew members and fans. They have threatened to murder kids, spouses of the opposing team’s crew as well as regular FB fans they disagree with. And its not just from a handful of Kiwi fans, ITS THOUSANDS! It’s ASTOUNDING that the Admin on that page can keep up with the threats being lobbed towards Team USA. It’s Hooligan-ism on a computer. They’re acting like complete animals.
Even if you’re not a sailing fan, just read the comments on the page. Albeit the Worst of the Worst have been deleted, the hate and vitriol being vomited makes it interesting read and a sad representation of what I thought was a great group of people and a classy sport.
Keep an eye on the page just before the race today (1:45pm PST) up until 4 hours after the races, unless EMTNZ wins, then it'll all be moot. But god forbid Oracle wins, that page will go FULL MELTDOWN.

I was wondering if anybody else was watching. The AC gets less media respect than hockey, which is a shame because the races have been awesome. I haven't been able to watch as much as I'd like, but the ones I've caught were amazing. If Oracle can come back, it's seriously one of the biggest comebacks in sports.
I still can't believe they didn't capsize here:

Yeah man. Im a HUGE Sailing buff. Grew up racing Sunfish in Santa Barbara Harbor and later from Newport to Catalina in O'day Mariners. Good times. Not a big sports guy but have a warm spot for LVC/AC and obviously, hockey.
What are your thoughts on these AC72's? Didnt care for them right after the mono's were retired but man have they grown on me after the foils were introduced. Theyre the F1's of Sailing. 2-3 times wind speed...upwind? Are you kidding me?

It has been a great series and if Oracle wins the next three races it will be epic. With the delays of some of the races my channel guide never updated and I did not record yesterdays race. I had to force it to record shows in the 1:00-3:30 time slot, hopefully it gets it right. I cannot believe that NZ did not dump it in that one race or even mess up their boat when it came down. These boats are incredible, how is it even possible to sail at 50 mph? It would be an epic ride. When the AC was in San Diego back in the late 80's or 90's I was in school at Point Loma and did some volunteer time for the race. We went to a few epic parties, luckily for my liver we did not party with Dennis Conner.
It looks like Oracle made the correct changes about 5 races ago and now they are not looking back. I wish they were getting better TV coverage. The graphics showing the current and wing wash are great and the TV commentators seem to be doing a great job.

I was born and raised on catamarans - something I unfortunately didn't pursue as I got older and kick myself for it to this day - so I love these boats. The monohulls are fine if you like match racing and 100s of tacks, etc. but you can't beat these boats closing at 80 knots! I've heard they may not go with these boats for the next AC which would be a shame. I understand they are cost-prohibitive for most, but I'd hate for them to go back. I still remember when Dennis Conner sailed a cat vs. the Kiwis back in the AC and smoked them.
Back in the late 80s I was lucky enough to get to go out on a 62 foot racing cat called the Aikane X-5 from Newport to Long Beach. I don't know how fast we were going but it was amazing. Flying over 6-7 foot swells, water spraying everywhere, blowing past every boat out there, awesome!
Damn, now I want to get on a boat...

Damn. Looks like its going to get postponed today. There's already a SCA up on the bay. Calling for 15-25 in the afternoon. Between that and the (ebb?) tide, that will probably put the upper wind limit arounf 21-23 knots.

My friend's brother has been on the NZ team for ages. Those Kiwis are a wacky bunch. Last time they won I thought everyone in the family was going to implode with joy.
