MANCHESTER, NH – Right wing Oscar Moller’s two goals set the pace for the Manchester Monarchs as they recorded a 4-2 victory over the Springfield Falcons Wednesday evening at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Manchester (41-21-2-6, 90 points) remains in first place in the Atlantic Division with 90 points. Springfield (30-33-2-3, 65 points) is ranked sixth in the Atlantic Division with 65 points.

“I just think we kind of shut it down and I feel badly for ‘Zats’ (Jeff Zatkoff),” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris following the game. “He played a wonderful game for us. The penalty kill did a wonderful job and we got off the beaten path a little bit. It’s a good reminder that you have to play the full 60 minutes.”

“I thought it could have been a larger margin that it was with how thoroughly we played,” said Morris. “To let them come back in and make it a 4-2 game makes it sound like it was closer than it was. It was a pretty solid effort for about 55 minutes.”

“I think it was a hard fought game and they were well prepared,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris when discussing this evening’s opponent. “I thought their defensive game was stellar - they were in shot lanes and their goalie was real solid.”

“Our goaltending was excellent too and we had a real strong penalty kill. The issue with the penalties is that it taxes a lot of our guys we rely on to score goals. When you spend that much time in the box, your guys are losing energy to produce. It was real hard for our team to get the puck to the net,” said Morris.

“Coming down the stretch when you play against hungry teams, you better be alert and you better be coming back hard and that was the difference in the game. They get a rebound and they chipped it in. Zatkoff gave us every opportunity to win but it’s hard to win games when you can’t get on the scoresheet,” concluded Morris.

Zatkoff stopped 32/33, the only goal came 2:47 into the third period.

“It’s a shame to know we lost tonight,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. “We put lots of pucks on (goaltender Nathan) Lawson and he was stellar. We only could get one past him on a power play.

“The compete-level seemed to be there but we didn’t finish off around the net. A couple of poor decisions late with a one-goal lead cost us the two points. We need a 60-minute focus. The lackadaisical play in the end spoiled a pretty good game. It’s tough to swallow that one.”

“It was a good third period, but it’s a sixty minute game,” explained Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris following Sunday afternoon’s loss. “Give those guys a lot of credit for how hard they played and how physical they were at the start of the game. It won them the game."

“You need to match or exceed their intensity level and we didn’t do that. If we can play like we did in the third, we’re going to win that game,” said Morris. “We had a defensive breakdown on the first goal, we’ve got to get our guys to communicate.”

Jordan Weal has a chance to make one hell of a splash in Manchester. I don't expect him to jump into a top-6 role immediately, but at least the Monarchs will have someone that can potentially replace Moller's production.
