What kind of crap is this
So the Monarchs finished with the second best record in the AHL this year... as a 1st seed, they face the 8th seed Norfolk Admirals (Ducks AHL team) so, how the hell does Norfolk have home ice advantage? wtf?
on a website, this was written on a Game 2 recap
<< The series heads back to Norfolk for games 3 and 4. Game 5, if necessary, will also be played in Norfolk. Due to the distance between the two teams, Manchester only got to have the first two games on their home ice. It was not what they would have expected after earning the top honors in the conference since home ice advantage is supposed to be a perk. But, as Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris said, there is nothing they can do but play the games. >>
again wtf? why not play 1-2 in Norfolk & 3-4-5 in Manchester? Monarchs got royally screwed here (unless im missing something)

The only thing that would make sense is that the Monarchs would get games 6 and 7, if necessary. I think the NBA used to have a 2-3-2 format for the finals up until a couple years ago.

I think round one is best of 5. Isn't there an option where the higher seeded team can pick to have home games first or second?

Yes. They can either pick to have the 1st 2 games at home or play the 1st 2 on the road and then have 3 at home.

oh damn...so technically... the Monarchs ownership decided it this way?

It's a coin flip pretty much.

Either way, there is no real advantage in the first round. Just win your games.
But of course, so far the Monarchs split their home games and now just lost in Game 3. So they're pretty much screwed. Down 2-1 in the series with 2 more games on the road.
