I hope the team proves me wrong, but given what I've been witnessing lately at CBBA, I don't think the Reign will be getting out of the first round of the playoffs (again) this year. It's becoming more and more likely that Stockton will be our initial opponent, and as they showed us again yesterday evening, they're a tough foe.
Last Saturday's 3-1 win over the Thunder was nothing short of a "go figure" outcome, as the Reign were outplayed, outshot (17-1 in the 1st period alone and 39-18 overall), and outhustled all game long. J.P. clearly saved our butt. Yesterday, on the other hand, after the opening fisticuffs, Stockton's aggressive, tight-checking defense frustrated our offense time and time again (we continue to look desperately out of sync), and our sloppy defense, senseless PIMs, and an off night on Anderson's part culminated in a 4-2 loss. (How this team is still competing for the top seed in the Western Conference is beyond me.)
Whether it's due to the numerous roster changes this season, our losing Hutchinson to greener pastures (his record with the Reign--22-4-0-2--is still better than the rest of the goalies we've had at our disposal--combined!), a faulty system, or just piss-poor execution, the Reign had better get the situation straightened out soon, or they'll be a "one and done" again come playoff time.
I usually like my crow with plenty of salt and pepper on it; but, sadly, something tells me I won't be needing either anytime soon.
Let's go, Reign!
