Default Reign Face Thunder in First Round of Kelly Cup Playoffs

Reign Face Thunder in First Round of Kelly Cup Playoffs
First home game is Tuesday, Apr. 22 at 7 p.m.

ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign, four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, secured the second seed in the West and will face the Stockton Thunder in the first round of the 2014 Kelly Cup Playoffs.

The Reign will play the first Western Conference Quarterfinal game at Stockton Arena on Friday, Apr. 18 followed by Game 2 on Saturday, Apr. 19. This best-of-seven series will then move to Ontario for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday, Apr. 22 and Wednesday, Apr. 23, respectively.

The schedule for the first round is below.

Western Conference Quarterfinal (Ontario vs. Stockton):
    • Game 1: Friday, Apr. 18 at 7:30 p.m. (at Stockton)
    • Game 2: Saturday, Apr.19 at 7:30 p.m. (at Stockton)
    • Game 3: Tuesday, Apr. 22 at 7 p.m. (at Ontario)
    • Game 4: Wednesday, Apr. 23 at 7 p.m. (at Ontario)
    • Game 5: Saturday, Apr. 26 at 7:30 p.m. (at Stockton – if necessary)
    • Game 6: Sunday, Apr. 27 at 5 p.m. (at Ontario – if necessary)
    • Game 7: Tuesday, Apr. 29 at 7 p.m. (at Ontario – if necessary)

This will be the second post-season meeting between these two teams as they met in the first round back in 2009, the Reign’s first-ever playoff appearance. Stockton took the series in Game 7 with a 5-4 win.

Through the 2013-14 season against Stockton, Ontario led the series 10-6-0-0 with six wins at Stockton Arena, four at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Last season was the Reign’s deepest playoff run when they swept Utah to advance to the second round but fell to Idaho 5-3 in Game 6. Stockton went all the way to the Kelly Cup Finals last year but lost 6-0 to Reading in Game 5. This is Ontario’s fourth all-time postseason appearance.

Win the division, start Games 1 and 2 on the road. Makes sense.

If he didn't play 5 games in the ECHL this season, he's ineligible for the playoffs.
Anyway, rooting for a Royals/Reign final (yet again). Hopefully this year we get it.

    TONIGHT:
The Ontario Reign and Stockton Thunder begin their best-of-seven first round playoff meeting at Stockton Arena. Through the 2013-14 regular season, the Reign held a 10-6-0-0 record over the Thunder and outscored them 47 to 42. Ontario finished first in the shared Pacific Division with 95 points, 21 more than Stockton who finished third in the Pacific.

    FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT:
These two teams had more than their fair share of each other this season with 16 regular season match-ups. The original schedule had them playing 14 times, but with San Francisco’s early exit, they added two more games to fill in the schedule gaps. A physical game can always be expected when these two face off. During the 2013-14 regular season alone, these two teams combined for 586 penalty minutes – an average of 36 combined infraction minutes per game. With 32 minutes, Derek Couture leads the Reign in that department, on the other bench, Mathieu Coderre-Gagnon leads the Thunder with 45.

    LAST TIME WE WERE HERE:
In 2009 the Reign faced the Thunder in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. It was Ontario’s first season, first Division Championship, and first taste of the postseason. The series was neck and neck until the very end of the best-of-seven series. There were five one-goal games, including Game seven which ended with a 5-4 final score in favor of the Thunder.

    PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE:
After their initial appearance, Ontario was kept out of playoff contention for the next two season until Head Coach Jason Christie brought the team back to the Kelly Cup run in 2012. The Reign had a first round exit in the 2012 Kelly Cup playoffs, and went on to their first-ever second round appearance last season. The Reign fell to the Idaho Steelheads both years; in five games in 2012, six games in 2013. Stockton had their most successful Kelly Cup run last year going to the finals but ultimately falling to the Reading Royals 6-0 in Game 5.

"The Thunder was granted two home games to start the postseason because Ontario was shut out of Citizens Business Bank Arena with Disney On Ice already scheduled."

    Forward takes charge | Recordnet.com

Stockton won 3-1 Friday night, and as I said in another post, given the inconsistent play we've been seeing from the Reign since Hutchinson left, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see Ontario get eliminated in the first round again this year. Becoming an all-too-familiar story with this franchise.

WTF, Ontario? You're messing with my dream matchup again. Not that we're breezing through our first round series...
