He asked the coach for some time off (non hockey related). So to keep his rights and be able to dress another player they went the suspension route. Under ECHL rules he cant play for the Reign for 45 days.
He wanted to spend the holidays with his family, according to him. When will he get a chance to that while playing in the NHL
Fish I am guessing Newtown played into the decision. By time he is 35 will both his parents be alive? he would have missed 10 more years together. I dont expect a lot of people to understand, particularly the younger people.
I applaud his decision and expect that we will see more NHLrs moving to Europe and to other leagues after the holidays.
He can come back to the Reign in 44 days
What a weird guy! I use work as an excuse to avoid spending time with my family around the holidays.![]()
With arguably the most difficult stretch in the schedule coming up next month (Alaska 5X, etc.), now he decides to take some time off? If it's for medical reasons, then I understand. But if it's simply to be with the family during the holidays, as reported above, then I say enjoy the remainder of the season/lockout at home and let someone else have his playing time. I can't imagine this decision going over well among his teammates.
Go Reign!
It's called a tradeoff. Life is full of them. There are plenty of people who live hundreds of miles from their families and don't get to visit them because they only get one or two days off. And others who'll spend a good chunk of their Christmas day working in a hospital or nursing home.
As someone who's seen many a player bolt from the ECHL to Europe or wherever during the season, I don't think it's admirable to put time in somewhere until a better offer comes along.
