It was a mistake-filled, tight-checking, low-scoring, penalty-filled game.

Mostly, though, the Kings’ 2-1 overtime victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday at Staples Center was cathartic. It was a must-win victory as some Kings headed off for the Olympics in Sochi, Russia and others traveled or stayed behind for a two-week vacation.

Defensemen Jake Muzzin and Robyn Regehr rallied the Kings with goals in the third period and in overtime, ending a four-game losing streak that cast doubt on the team’s fitness as a legitimate Stanley Cup challenger in the spring.
