As a scout with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, Rob Laird does his best work behind the scenes with little to no fanfare.

The spotlight was a lot tougher to avoid on Tuesday when the 59-year-old Regina product returned to his old stomping grounds with the Stanley Cup in tow - instantly transforming the humble scout into a hometown hero.

"I'm not a celebrity," Laird insisted with a laugh, giving way to his iconic travelling partner. "The Stanley Cup is bigger than the game itself. Everybody knows about the Cup. I've been lucky enough to have it two out of the last three years now with the Kings. Every time I'm with it, it brings smiles to people's faces."
