Game of Thrones Really Brings Out The Rape Apologists

This article represents the worst that viewers have to offer and while I am on the opposite side of a lot of you, I don't think we have sunk this low. Just to be clear, I would never marginalize rape in any form. I just saw the scene differently. Maybe because I projected what I read as far as the book version goes, onto the scene. And maybe because, as clumsily as it may or may not have been directed(for you to judge), the director has stood behind the thought that it was at least semi consensual. So, once again, different eyes see things a different way. But man, some of the comments people sent to the writer of the article I posted...see mmmcammy/SmytheKing, there's your enemy. This article will enrage you a bit.

That being said...the author of it is not without fault either.

But DarkDoug has another embarrassing problem. He was born without the ability to discern nuance in a person. Oh to live in a world so black and white, where a bad person is just bad. Jaime did do terrible things. He did murder King Aerys II…because he was about to burn down the entire city and everyone in it because he was insane. His lackey was about do to his bidding so Jaime stopped him. Was it right? Eh, morally grey. And yes, he did try to murder Bran…because Bran saw something that would get Cersei and her children (also Jaime's children) killed. Was it right? Nope. On so many levels nope. But murdering a child to protect a lover is a far cry from raping said lover. Being in an incestuous relationship is gross but having an off-center moral compass is different than not having one at all. I believe you were thinking of Ser Gregor Clegane, yes?

See that speaks to SK's irritation at people getting offended at things other than the rape.

Like I said, this article may infuriate...so be warned.

I don't think applying real world logic to movies and television is good practice, I mean we've all seen kissing scenes where 'no' becomes 'yes' so many times it's cliche by now we almost expect it. So those few moments when Cersei is kissing back will be enough for some people to assume it's more or less consensual because of movie logic, add to that the fact that it is consensual in the books and you're gonna have a whole lot of people who I don't blame for being confused and certainly would not label 'rape apologists', whatever that's supposed to mean. Now that being said, if the writer/directors were trying to portray the scene as something other than a rape, they did a poor job.

From an earlier link in here.

Apparently Graves thinks that he did something more interesting and complicated than that. In an interview with Alan Sepinwall, Graves claims the sex “becomes consensual by the end because anything for them ultimately results in a turn-on, especially a power struggle.”
Uh...what? So, she was actually turned on. Ah...I see. It's the "She actually didn't mean no. She wanted it. You could tell from the tears." defense. Now I understand.

I'm perfectly willing to entertain what you said about projection too jd. That sort of bleed-through is inevitable. Having said that, a TV show (or movie) should never rely on source material to get a point across without directly using it.

I actually read it as conflicted the first time through and didn't change my read on it the second time through. Basically, I got the impression that Cersei wasn't fighting him as much as she could have and I somehow got the impression that she was into it. I know how that sounds, but that's the impression I got. That being said, if she had fought harder and clearly wasn't into it, I don't know that it would have stopped Jaime.

I don't actually remember the scene from the book, but I have read it, so I don't know how much it may have informed my opinion. It was an unexpected turn, though.

Torn between wanting more Hodor and not really being interested in Bran.

Tonight was a weird episode for book readers...way off in terms of plot. And some (probably) revealing things at the end that hasn't hit the books yet. Interesting....

agree completely, this episode was the single most unbook like ever...and for that I really think we should separate into 2 groups this week and really use the book thread.

Now they're just ****ing with us book readers. My wife, who hasn't read this far, was asking about what happened in tonight's episode, and all I could tell her was "I don't know". Her response was that maybe they're changing it up so that the book readers and non book readers can be on the same page.

I was a bit confused about why we saw the stuff at the very end.
