One beer I had recently in Prague CZ was Staropramen. OMFG was this beer smooth and yummy. It was a pils but it didn't just taste like cereal malt, though it did have a mild malted flavor. The hops were subtle and just enough to give a slight hint to the malt.
The beer went down magnificently, and at 25 Czech Koruna ($1.20) for a .5L glass of beer, it was a steal! It went wonderfully with the bread, mustard and sausages. If it had been one of these IPAs on acid, the beer would have overpowered the food. Just like consuming almost any red wine with lobster. It would just kill the taste.
So is the purpose of the beer to consume it by itself as a meal of sorts, or is it to be consumed with food to bring out the food's flavors?
I either case I think I'd go with more malt-like flavored beers than a hop attack with yellow/amber/brown colored water.

I like an IPA once in a while, but it is hop overkill for my taste. And I agree that they all taste pretty similar to each other because of that. Personally, I like stouts. And bocks. And lagers. And Pilsners. And Ales. Why limit yourself when the world is chock full of great beer?

I agree. I like almost all styles of beer out there. But if you give me just one choice, it'll be an IPA.

well, all I can say is some IPAs are better than others. alike you, Daxx, I don't particularly enjoy every one of them - some are too hoppy or lack thereof, too heavy, not malty enough, too sweet of an aftertaste or an overkill thereof, and so on.
for instance, Firestone's Union Jack? no thanks, I haven't touched that beer in so long a time that I can't remember which of the above categories that it falls into. however, I do clearly remember that it wasn't as enjoyable as Kern River's Just Outstanding. but a Double Jack? sure. OTOH, some DIPA of another brewery that I forget the name of (how is it that this one is forgettable when their beers aren't that bad?) isn't any better than their IPA. to each its own, I guess.
it just depends on your palate, mine and others, and it does change over the years. remember those days when you were young and knocking back on Buds, Coors, Millers, Nattys, etc? don't deny it, most of us had been there and enjoyed them not because it was cheap but they were usually what everyone else was drinking at the parties. as for me, I started growing tired of the same old fizzy yellow **** and gradually moved on to Pete's Wicked which I thought was the best ****in thing ever. then I moved on to others as they came about and then wondered why I was stupid to declare that Pete's made the world go round.
now as you can see, the last several years have seen an explosion of craft breweries. at such a staggering rate, there will never be the day that the best average Joes within us have tried them all. so, just go and enjoy your favorite brew at the moment.
I BELIEVE I'll have another beer!

Dammit Beerman! I wanted to start a legit discussion after Mitch's slightly **** monkey post, an you had to and **** it up!
I guess I'll have to drink a few IPAs at the LGK game tomorrow night to get back into them.
As far as the crappy high school kegger beers you mentioned, I consumed many pitchers of them during the playoffs at the Penalty Box. I'm no slouch when comes those **** beers. I'm a beer snob and beer slut simultaneously.

Suck on that monkeyboy!!1!

I don't drink beer to be refreshed. That's what water is for.
