MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, have signed right wing Sean Backman, left wing Hunter Bishop and defenseman Vincent LoVerde to American Hockey League contracts, announced Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough on Wednesday.
Backman, 27, recorded 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points and 60 penalty minutes in 133 games with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers during the last two seasons (2011-13). Prior to joining the Sound Tigers, the 5-foot-8, 165-pound native of White Plains, New York split his first professional season, 2010-11, between the AHL’s Texas Stars and the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads. He collected 23 points (7-16=23) and 20 penalty minutes in 67 games with the Stars and four points (2-2=4) and four penalty minutes in five games with the Steelheads. Backman spent four years at Yale University (2006-10) where he registered 77 goals and 49 assists for 126 points and 110 penalty minutes in 122 games.
Bishop, 25, split the 2012-13 season between the Monarchs, Rochester Americans, Lake Erie Monsters and the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays. The 6-foot, 196-pound native of Fairbanks, Alaska recorded three goals and two assists for five points and 22 penalty minutes with the Monarchs while he was held scoreless in one game with the Americans and three games with the Monsters. Bishop appeared in 48 games with the Stingrays and collected 49 points (24-25=49) and 20 penalty minutes. The left wing missed the entire 2011-12 season due to injury. Bishop registered six goals and seven assists for 13 points and 10 penalty minutes with the Hamilton Bulldogs during parts of both the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. He also played for Ohio State University’s Buckeyes during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons recording 29 goals and 29 assists for 58 points and 40 penalty minutes in 75 games.
LoVerde, 24, appeared in 51 games for the Monarchs last season and registered two goals and 11 assists for 13 points and 30 penalty minutes. His plus-17 plus/minus rating finished the season tied for third on the Monarchs. Prior to joining Manchester, LoVerde collected seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points and 15 penalty minutes in 27 games for the ECHL’s Ontario Reign. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound native of Chicago, Illinois appeared in 64 games for the Reign during his first professional season, 2011-12, recording five goals and 19 assists for 24 points and 54 penalty minutes. The defenseman tallied 36 points (6-30=36) and 136 penalty minutes in 159 games over four seasons (2007-11) with the Miami University (Ohio) Red Hawks. LoVerde had a plus/minus rating of plus-67 and only missed four games during his collegiate career.
