    There is nothing in the actual code section about consecutive contracts, but it is the employees option. There is no way that Brown walks away from millions of dollars.

    Given that Brown's contract length is authorized under a collective bargaining agreement governed by federal law, the California statute is probably inapplicable.

    But like others said, Brown isn't going to try to get out of the contract.

    Nope. According to the code, a contract is limited, not the employer/employee relationship. So it is only individual contracts that are greater than 7 years.

    (a) Except as otherwise provided in subdivision (b) [phonorecording contracts], a contract to render personal service, other than a contract of apprenticeship as provided in Chapter 4 (commencing with Section 3070), may not be enforced against the employee beyond seven years from the commencement of service under it.

    Thats not what this article is stating though.

    It’s not even about the contract alone. Section 2855 applies “whenever an employer has a contractual right to its worker’s services for a total of eight or more years, even if transpiring under a series of multiple contracts,” according to Fangraphs.
