Well, Blake was hired with the title of Assistant GM when he arrived after Hextall went to Philly.

So is it a revelation to think that the first officer of the ship would take over if the captain is no longer on board?

Was Hextal assistant GM in Philly when he became GM?

Not so much a revelation but a surprise as they promoted Futa to VP of Hockey Ops three years ago and it seemed pretty clear that he was being groomed to replace Dean. But things can change, especially within a team's power structure, so maybe Blake does get it over Futa if Luc is pushing for that.

But the possibility that Blake should become the GM is not an "out of the blue, oh my God, could this ACTUALLY Happen????" kind of thought.

Much like Futa, the guy's in the organization, has been very much in the loop on the team's dealings, and has been a part of the team for a while. If you were to come up with a short list of guys to take over for Dean, his name would have to be on that list.

Based on a few of the reactions in this thread, though, to some, it seems like the idea has sprung up from nothing. Like saying that they'd hand the reigns to... I dunno... Brent Sopel.

Blake as a GM would be the easiest way to change the head of the power structure and put everyone on notice that there was a new sheriff in town. He was hired by Dean of course but he's not part of the system/structure that Dean has worked so hard to put in place. If Phil wanted to let Dean go, replacing him with Futa would be somewhat pointless. Any outside GM would probably want the ability to scorch the earth if they felt it was required.

If we want a culture change Blake is the right hire. He's not married to this group of players like Lombardi or Futa is. He unquestionably has a better understanding of the modern player, don't forget he was retired just seven seasons ago. And he has a legacy with the franchise. There's a reason Blake is regarded league wide as one of the bright up and coming executives. There was plenty of talk of him interviewing for the Maple Leafs GM position back in 2015.

While at the same time it's just as common to bring someone in from the outside, just as Deano was brought it.
It's not always the assistant that gets the promotion.

Really to be honest it's a 50-50 situation on whether they promote from within or from without.
