"Brown haters" (myself included!) are completely within their rights to be upset that a power forward that was already very clearly on the decline got signed to one of the worst deals in modern history. And the fact that that deal continues to haunt the team (and will do so for years to come) is extremely frustrating.

But I don't really think anyone blames Brown. He gave a hometown discount on the previous contract. He captained the team to two Cups. As you say, he accepted the offer he was given, no agents driving up the price or holdouts or drama. Throughout his decline, he's seemingly put in hard work, been a gym rat. His game is gone and he's grossly overpaid, but the effort is still there. He developed into a great captain from a community outreach perspective, was great to the fans, has been nothing but professional.

I appreciate your sensitivity, but don't mistake the hate on Brown the grossly overpaid third liner for hate on Brown the man. Don't think there's much (or hopefully any) of that in these parts.
Look, I know it's not personal, but statements like "one of the worst contracts in modern history" is total hyperbole. There are many, many worse. Also, as you said, he brings it every night, so character isn't an issue (which is commendable, considering the emotional impact of his effort's translation to statistics). Oh, and speaking of statistics, his numbers last year were the best in the last 5 years. Then there's the locker room presence. Leadership is a quality most don't have. You must realize that there are things that are known and seen by those on the inside that we don't see, right? If Lombardi never gave up on him, and even big goofy Bowlby is sticking with him, there is something there. Perhaps there's been something that's been nagging him injury-wise for years, or some other unknown. If he comes up with around 20 goals the next 3 years, is it not a good deal?

Looks like it's going to be 8/106, a 13.25m cap hit.

Can you share a few examples? Specifically in hockey?

Dion Phaneuf, David Clarkson, Dan Girardi, and Bobby Ryan. That's just off the top of my head, and not even considering the expired, retired and bought out over the last 5 years. Oh, they also aren't players who led their teams to 2 cups after having given the team a hometown discount on his previous contract.

If Pocklington re-buys the Oilers, McDavid is ours.

McDavid just signed the same contract Crosby did back in the day. Same percentage of the cap. Pens did fine with it. If the Oil get in a cap crunch it will be because of the Lucic and Russell type contracts. If they lose Draisaitl, it will because they gave his money to Lucic, not McDavid.

And for those saying it will cause the next lockout, it's irrelevant to the collective bargaining agreement. Players get their percentage, and that's all. Escrow makes sure of it.

The Edmonton Oilers have locked up their 20-year-old franchise player, as the team announced Wednesday that its has signed captain Connor McDavid to an eight-year, $100 million contract extension.
McDavid led the NHL in assists (70) and points (100) during this past regular season and added five goals and four assists in 13 playoff games.
His deal will carry an annual cap hit of $12.5 million – 16.6 per cent of his team’s cap space if the cap remains at $75 million next season.

Based on pure hockey entertainment value, IMO he deserves it.
