Default MTL Carey Price 8yrs $10.5M AAV

That's an insane amount of term/money for a goalie and puts him in line with Toews and Kane.

Same here. Price and even Bishop make Quick's deal look very good. The common complaint regarding Quick is the term but his peers are getting extended to the same point.

OK, I apologize for saying Fowler's contract is stupid...this one is in the looney bin. Did these GM's come up with some hidden money?

The difference here being that the CBA runs out after 5 years of this contract. They are probably counting on the ability to drop the last years in a cap-free compliance buyout.

So apparently its a 10 yr $14 Mil (1.75mil) contract with a 70 Mil signing bonus.

Basically give him all his money up front and buyout down the line is expected since 1.75 contract is nothing. Also, this contract would be safe post a lockout.

OR This is some funky math below from another source:

Carey Price signed a 8 year / $84,000,000 contract with the Montreal Canadiens, including a $70,000,000 signing bonus, $84,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $10,500,000. In 2017-18, Price will earn a base salary of $7,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $6,500,000.

I think teams and players use the annual signing bonus as a way to circumnavigate the escrow process. ROR was one of the first people that I remember signing a big bonus deal when he extended in Buffalo.

Player gets paid, Teams have flexibility to trade and stay under the cap. Works for everyone. Except the fans. 70Mil signing bonus is going to make ticket prices sky rocket even more. but its Montreal so who cares.
